Luka Bloom – Saturday 2nd August @ 7pm
Luka Bloom was born Kevin Barry Moore in Newbridge, County Kildare. The youngest of six children, his oldest sibling is folk musician Christy Moore. As a youngster, Luka Bloom, took up the guitar, and became an accomplished fingerpicker by the time he entered his teens.
Playing as Barry Moore in his early years, in 1987 he left Ireland for New York City and adopted the stage name Luka Bloom, “Luka” from the Suzanne Vega song of the same name, “Bloom” from Leopold Bloom, the principal character in James Joyce’s Ulysses.
In a hectic career he has released 27 albums, his first in 1978 (Treaty Stone – as Barry Moore) and his most recent, in 2020 – Bitter Sweet Crimson. His most recent appearance at Ballyshannon Folk & Traditional Music Festival was in 2019 – when he also made our Festival Poster. Luka also joined us online for our virtual festival in 2020, during covid, when we received a great reaction from both festival fans and our diaspora, who in those uncertain times, enjoyed the connection with home – one of our diaspora contacted us privately from New York on the Saturday night as Luka Bloom sang the City of Chicago and said they were in tears ‘dreamin of the hills of Donegal’.
Don’t miss this intimate night in the company of the one and only, Luka Bloom.
