Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Music Festival – Launch 28th June 2019
The launch of the 42nd Ballyshannon Folk & Traditional Music Festival, the longest running Folk & Traditional Music Festival in Ireland, will take place in the Sandhouse Hotel Rossnowlagh on Friday 28th June. A Free Shuttle bus will leave from the Abbey Arts Centre at 9pm.
It’s back! The Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Music Festival marquee in the Market Yard is back in 2019 for its 42nd year and already the excitement is mounting. This year’s line-up is very exciting with a mix of traditional and contemporary artists to suit all tastes.
Friday night – we have Seamie O Dowd & Friends, Luka Bloom and Sharon Shannon & Band. Saturday night its Backwest, Moxie and Brian Deady and our finale on Sunday night features Coda, Dave Munnelly Trio and The Stunning.
Our launch night includes a drinks reception and refreshments at 9pm, music from Suil – Hailing from Armagh Donegal and Derry, Súil. Is one of the hottest trad bands in the northwest. The music is hard hitting tunes that merge into a contemporary sound. Steeped in The Irish traditional genre, with Katrina Meheen on Fiddle, Paddy Kenny on Whistle, Paddy Danagher on Guitar, Mark O Doherty on Percussion and Leanne Doherty on Vocal and Guitar, group have travelled throughout Europe, Ireland and the Uk. Their music is typified by extremely fast, sometimes percussive, flute and whistle atop complex guitar and percussive rhythms. The Songs are sung in English and Irish, in the folk and Sean Nós traditions, from Scottish and Irish Gaelic. The Band music is a stretch of organised jamming, blending melodies and improvisation into a single piece. The result is music that feels extremely “live,” for the launch of the 42nd Ballyshannon Folk Festival 2019. This will be a fantastic night of entertainment provided to you free of charge by the Ballyshannon Folk & Traditional Music Festival.
Born in 1978, the ‘Folk Festival’ has hosted all of the great names from the Irish folk and trad scene and continues today to offer itself as a vital platform for emerging folk and traditional music talent.
In 2019 Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Festival look forward to returning once again to its ‘roots’ with a marquee style festival, lively pub sessions, street entertainment, workshops, busking competitions, fringe events and ceilidh’s – this leading festival still has something to cater for all tastes 42 years later – which is a testament to its adaptability!
